Description:

Abstract:: Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) elevation data for the Santee Experimental Forest (SEF) near Cordesville, SC was acquired as point cloud (".LARS") from the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources (SCDNR) in the spring of 2009. The point cloud data accuracy specifications for Berkeley County (SC, the area that covers SEF) included a vertical root mean square error (RMSE) of about 8.0 cm and a standard deviation of ±15.9 cm. Quick Terrain Modeler® x64 (QTM) was used to generate the Bare Earth ground and Water surface raster digital elevation model (DEM) with a cell size of 0.5 m. The generated DEM was then exported as an ERDAS IMAGINE image (".img") and projected to the State Plane-NAD 83-South Carolina FIPS 3900 feet, using ESRI® ArcGIS 9.3.1.
The DEM was further pre-processed to minimize generation of discontinuous streams due to presence of bridges and culverts. This was achieved by reconditioning the DEM (Burning-in-Streams) with flowlines at bridge and culvert crossings using ArcHydro Tools by ESRI®. The flowlines (culverts and bridges) were created based on their respective spatial orientation. Bridges were identified and validated as intersections of roads and streams using aerial imagery acquired from the National Agricultural Imagery Program (NAIP). Total of 138 culverts were identified by examination of Bare Earth LiDAR DEM, followed by field verification to accurately define flow direction.
The new reconditioned DEM was used to generate Turkey Creek watershed boundary and sub-watersheds using ArcSWAT in August 2011 by Jose Martin of the SEF.
Purpose:: This data was designed to create high resolution data sets that will establish an authoritative source for elevation information for the State of South Carolina.

Watershed 78 (the Turkey Creek Watershed) was established in 1964 and stage was measured until 1984 using an ADR device (at a location about 800 meters downstream from the currently established site on Highway 41 near Huger, SC). In February 2005 the US Geologic Survey set up a gauging station at the Highway 41 N bridge over Turkey Creek. They installed a Sutron 8210 flow logger interfaced with Satlink 2 and linked to a bubbler-type sensor on the streambed to measure stage level every 15 minutes.
